Birding Sites in Hernando County is designed to help local and visiting birders by indicating the localities and times of year when birds are most likely to be found in Hernando County. The guide also describes the area's principal habitats and provides directions to the places where birds can generally be observed.

Ron Smith has compiled a comprehensive list of the bird species that have been reported in Hernando County. His sources include eBird submissions (through mid-July 2026), Stevenson & Anderson’s TheBirdlife of Florida (1998), An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the WeekiwacheePreserve (C.Black, reports through February 2011), and information gleaned from the results of the 2016 Hernando County Breeding Bird Atlas (Florida Ornithological Society, 2016).
