Our Mission
is to promote an awareness and appreciation of nature; to preserve and protect natural ecosystems; and to encourage responsible environmental stewardship.

Our Origins
date to the 1950s, when Hernando County had fewer than 12,000 year-round residents.  In 1959 we became part of Florida Audubon Society, and in 1971 we incorporated as a nonprofit organization.

Outreach and Education
have always been at the heart our mission.  Our programs and field trips are open to all and we do not charge a fee. For many years we have provided the award-winning Audubon Adventures series to participating classrooms in our public schools, giving students the opportunity to expand their understanding of conservation issues.

About Ken Meyer

Ken obtained his B.S. in Zoology from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1978, and his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1987. From 1987 to 1997, he served as a post-doctoral and then research associate in the University of Florida's Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and was employed as a research biologist with the National Park Service in Big Cypress National Preserve. In 1997, Ken founded and now directs the nonprofit Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI), which conducts studies that support the management and conservation of rare birds. This research, in the southeastern US and Latin America, has addressed questions about breeding biology, population ecology, demography, migration, toxicology, and the effects of habitat loss. ARCI's study subjects have included Swallow-tailed Kites, Short-tailed Hawks, White-crowned Pigeons, Snail Kites, Great Egrets, Wood Storks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Jabiru Storks, Great White Herons, Reddish Egrets, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, and Crested Caracaras. Besides producing critical data on the conservation ecology of imperiled birds, these projects have helped train students, land managers, and other biologists here and abroad.  Since 1998, Ken has served as an adjunct Associate Professor in the University of Florida's Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation.
